The South Coast Air Quality Management District invites you to participate in its Electric Lawn Mower exchange program, coming to Inglewood this Saturday, May 21st. You can trade-in your old gas-powered mower for a non-polluting electric model and save money while helping clean the air. Purchase a rechargeable, cordless electric mower for as low as $100 (saving up to $300), with the trade-in of a working gas mower. This year, AQMD has five different models to choose from. Exchange your mower in less than 10 minutes with drive-through convenience when the program comes to Hollywood Park or at other events planned across the Southland through July. Pre-registration is required. For details and to register for AQMD’s lawn mower exchange program, see http://www.aqmd.gov/tao/2011MowerFlyerEnglishFINAL.pdf , go to www.aqmd.gov and click on the lawn mower program banner or call 1-888-425-6247 (Tuesday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

It is official—the 2011 Founders Fund winner was announced at the Garden Club of America Annual Meeting in Indianapolis on Friday and is “beyond the Beetle: A Strategy of Diversity” proposed by the Worcester Garden Club in Zone I. The $25,000 award grant will be used for a demonstration arboretum in Green Hill Park where planting beetle resistant trees and providing information on preserving our forests will be an educational force.

As clubs begin to put together their own Founders Fund proposals or consider one for the future, it might be helpful to print out a copy of this winning project from the GCA website under the Founders Fund committee information for your chairman’s notebook.

The day offers hundreds of opportunities to learn and exchange gardening ideas – or to simply explore and enjoy magnificent gardens not normally open to the public.

The 2011 Open Day is May 1 in Pasadena and May 15 in Los Angeles.
Admission to each private garden is $5, Open Days are rain or shine, and no reservations are required.

Open Days is a national event that begins in March extends into early November. It includes more than 300 private gardens in eighteen states, from southern California to the coastline of Rhode Island. All the information you need is in the 2011 Open Days Directory ($21.95 including shipping and handling) available from the Garden Conservancy.

The Directory provides descriptions, visiting dates and hours, and driving directions to private gardens from coast to coast. The Directory also includes one free admission ticket to any private garden participating in the program, a $5 value. To purchase a Directory or to join the Garden Conservancy as a member and receive a free copy, call 1-888-842-2442 or order online.

Hundreds of neighbors and visitors from around the city gathered at the Getty House last week for the annual Windsor Square Hancock Park Historical Society Garden Tour. The proceeds from the garden tour will be donated to John Burroughs Elementary school for landscaping and gardens. HPGC members can be very proud of the garden, it looked wonderful! Special thanks to Pat Benner and Helen Hartung for their continuing efforts and to all those members who have worked at the garden. Congratulations to Cindy Chavatl Keene (pictured here with her family) who was honored for her tireless efforts to preserve the quality of life in our neighborhoods as president of the Hancock Park Homeowners Association Est. 1948.
